Sunday driving ban temporarily suspended in two federal states
North Rhine-Westphalia and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have decided to suspend the Sunday ban on heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes again temporarily due to the Corona crisis. The regulation will apply until 18 January 2021 and includes empty journeys but until further notice no large and heavy goods vehicles. In the remaining federal states, the regular Sunday driving ban between 0 and 22 hrs will remain in force according to the current status. A regularly updated overview of exceptions is available from the BAG (German only).
First EU mobility package finally adopted
For more than three years, it was hotly debated, now the EU Parliament has finally adopted the first mobility package. The reform is to come into force in stages between 2020 and 2025. There was resistance, especially from the member states in Eastern Europe, but the Parliament confirmed the negotiated compromise and rejected further counter-motions. The package of measures is intended above all to ensure fair working and competitive conditions in road freight transport. Many provisions revolve around better working conditions for drivers, such as the ban on taking the weekly rest period in the vehicle. You can read more here.
